Russia sentences ex-senator for financing killer gang
A Moscow court on Tuesday sentenced a former senator to life in prison for financing a criminal gang that killed at least 12 people.
The Moscow city court said in a statement that Igor Izmestyev, a former senator from the central Russian region of Bashkiriya, had besides paying for the murders also committed acts of terrorism and bribed state officials.
Izmestyev once also attempted to kill the son of the region's president, Ural Rakhimov, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev recently called the link between organised crime and the government a major problem, vowing to root out corruption at all levels of politics.
