Russia sends FM Lavrov to ASEAN summit
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will represent Moscow at the summit of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) this month in Bali, Indonesia, the ministry said on Tuesday.
"He will go," foreign ministry spokeswoman told AFP, referring to the November 17-19 annual ASEAN summit on the Indonesian island of Bali.
Outgoing President Dmitry Medvedev represented Russia at last year's summit of the 10-member grouping in Vietnam.
The Kremlin chief, who is expected to take part in an APEC summit in Hawaii later this month, had been scheduled to travel to Bali after that but plans were changed, official sources said.
Medvedev is due to step aside after just one term as president to let his mentor, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, reclaim his old job in March polls.
Putin has said Medvedev, who was widely believed to want another term in the Kremlin, will lead the ruling United Russia party in parliamentary polls set for December 4.
Putin has no plans to travel to Bali for the ASEAN summit, his spokesman Dmitry Peskov said this week.
