Russia sees no 'global' Japan nuclear threat
Russia sees no "global threat" from the explosions at a quake-damaged nuclear power station in Japan and Russian territory is not at risk, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Monday.
"Our specialists are sure that there is no threat to Russian territory," Putin said on a visit to the Siberian city of Tomsk in comments broadcast on state television.
"The experts also believe there should be no nuclear explosion which could destroy the reactor. According to the information that we have, we do not see a global threat," he added.
Japanese engineers were struggling to cool three nuclear reactors at the Fukushima power plant hit by two explosions which raised fears of a repeat of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster in the Soviet Union.
