Russia kills senior militant in Caucasus: official
Russian security forces have killed a top militant in the restive southern region of Dagestan, an official said on Saturday, as new deadly attacks hit the Northern Caucasus.
Dzhamaludin Dzhavatov, 41, was killed in a special operation by security forces in Dagestan, the region's deputy interior minister Magomed Ismailov said according to Russian news agencies.
He was the head of a local militant group and was on a national wanted list for a string of deadly attacks against security forces in the region, the official added.
The local pro-Kremlin authorities in Dagestan and other North Caucasus regions are battling to defeat an Islamist insurgency that has already killed scores of civilians and police.
In the latest unrest Saturday, a local businessman was killed in the village of Chontoul in Dagestan by a bomb that exploded when he got into his car, the Interfax news agency reported, citing local officials.
Meanwhile, in the fellow North Caucasus region of Ingushetia a policeman was killed in a similar fashion when a bomb exploded under his car, Interfax said.
