Russia happy with 'reassuring' Arab League Syria mission
Russia on Friday said that it was satisfied with the start of the mission of Arab League observers in Syria, saying their initial statements about the situation were reassuring.
"Russia is satisfied with the start to the Arab League observer mission," the foreign ministry said in a statement.
It said that judging by comments from the mission's head Sudanese General Mohammed Ahmed Mustafa al-Dabi after a visit to the restive city of Homs, "the situation there is reassuring and clashes have not been reported."
Russia has for months resisted Western pressure to take a harder line against President Bashar al-Assad's regime and said the blame for the unrest lies as much with the opposition as the authorities.
