Russia conducted six air strikes against Islamic State targets on Friday, the defence ministry said, on the third day of its intervention in the war-torn country.

"Six strikes were conducted on targets of the ISIS terrorist group in 14 flights by Sukhoi Su-34, Sukhoi Su-24M and Sukhoi Su-25 jets," the defence ministry said in a statement.

Two Syrian regions were hit; the Idlib province in the country's northwest and the Hama province in the centre, which had been targeted in previous Russian airstrikes.

The defence ministry said the strikes had completely destroyed a facility used to produce explosive devices near the city of Maaret al-Numan in Idlib province, as well as a nearby terrorist base.

"More than ten pieces of military equipment, including infantry vehicles, burned up as a result of the strike," the statement said.

The Russian defence ministry also said an underground militant command post had been destroyed in a strike in Latamna, in the Hama province. The strikes also targeted two bunkers used as command posts and weapon storage facilities, one of which was completely destroyed.
