Russia condemns Iraqi Christian deaths
Russia on Monday condemned the hostage-taking in a Baghdad cathedral that resulted in the deaths of 46 Iraqi Christians as an act of terrorism as it endorsed efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.
"We firmly condemn the criminal actions of terrorists, who attack the freedom and lives of people of all faiths," the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.
"We confirm our support for the efforts of Iraqi authorities in bringing an end to extremist activities...and express our sincere condolences for the deaths of innocent civilians and police," the statement said.
Forty-six worshippers died and 60 were wounded on Sunday after armed men stormed the church during evening mass, according to Iraq's interior ministry. Seven members of security forces also died, along with five attackers.
The Islamic State of Iraq, the local branch of Al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility for the attack, according to the SITE monitoring group.
