US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's criticism of Russia's legislative elections threatens to bring the two sides' relations to a new low, a top Russian lawmaker warned on Tuesday.

"The statement obviously does not help improve the atmosphere of our relations," the lower house of parliament's foreign affairs committee chief Konstantin Kosachev told the RIA Novosti news agency.

The pro-Kremlin deputy, whose remarks frequently anticipate similar statements by the foreign ministry, called Clinton's remarks "one of the darkest pages in the recent history of Russia-US relations."

He also repeated earlier accusations from Prime Minister Vladimir Putin that Western powers were funding Russian opposition groups to help discredit the outcome of Sunday's polls, which the ruling party won with a narrow majority.
