The Russian foreign ministry called on Egyptian authorities on Saturday to secure "civil peace" and re-establish stability in the crisis-torn nation.

"The Egyptian leadership and all of society (should) display a high degree of national responsibility and do everything necessary to stabilise the situation and guarantee civil peace," a statement quoted Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as telling his Egyptian counterpart by telephone.

Lavrov added that he was certain that "the Egyptian side will undertake exhaustive efforts to ensure the security of Russian citizens staying in Egypt."

Russian state news reports said that more than 25,000 Russian nationals were in Egypt, where at least 48 people were killed in nationwide protests since Tuesday.
