Russia arrests top official for corruption: ministry

Russia on Wednesday arrested a top interior ministry official on suspicon of abusing power and embezzlement after he awarded tender auctions to fake companies, officials said.

Major General Vladimir Cheishvili is suspected of embezzling some 12 million rubles in funds (400,000 dollars) by awarding tender contracts for meat supplies to fake firms, the investigative committee of prosecutors said in a statement.

Contacted by AFP, the interior ministry confirmed the arrest. Cheishvili was head of the ministry's technical and material procurement centre.

President Dmitry Medvedev has launched a drive to end corruption in Russia but anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International has said it is among the top 25 most-corrupt countries worldwide.
