Russia accuses Ukraine of 'crudely' violating peace accords

Moscow slammed Kiev Thursday for violating the ceasefire in eastern Ukraine, accusing it of intensifying its military offensive against rebels.

"It is obvious today that these agreements have been crudely violated by the Ukrainian side," the Russian foreign ministry said.

"In place of de-escalation, Kiev has intensified the hostilities in the southeast of the country with the use of heavy equipment, which has led to thousands of casualties and large-scale destruction.

"Ukraine's Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said Wednesday that he would like to discuss the Ukrainian crisis in the "Geneva format", referring to a four-way meeting in April which included the United States and the European Union.

The accords reached in Geneva called on all "illegal armed groups" in Ukraine to surrender, however since then the rebels have declared independence in Donetsk and Lugansk regions and over 4,000 people have been killed as Kiev's forces attempt to retake the areas.

"Looking at the situation today there is question about the practicability of going back to the format which did not bring the expected results," the Russian foreign ministry statement said.
