Japan's ambassador to Russia, who was recalled following President Dmitry Medvedev's visit to disputed islets, will return to Moscow on Sunday, Kyodo News reported, quoting government sources.

Japan's ambassador to Moscow Masaharu Kono returned home on Wednesday as Tokyo protested against the Russian president's visit on Monday to one of the Kuril islands, which lie north of Japan's Hokkaido island.

The islands have been controlled by Moscow since they were seized by Soviet troops at the end of World War II, but Tokyo claims the southernmost four as Japanese territory.
