Putin 'would examine' Khodorkovsky clemency demand
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Thursday said he would be prepared to review any request for clemency by jailed tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky, if he is elected president in 2012.
"A convict can write a request for clemency and recognise his guilt and if Khodorkovsky makes such a request I will examine it," Putin told reporters at the end of a marathon televised phone-in session. "But first I need to become president."
Khodorkovsky is set to stay in jail until 2016 after being convicted in two fraud trials which supporters say were ordered by the authorities after he dared oppose Putin.
