Putin says election losses 'inevitable'
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Tuesday played down the sharp election losses suffered by his ruling party as an inevitable outcome of tough economic times.
"There were losses, but they were inevitable," Putin said two days after his United Russia party managed to cling on to a slim majority after losing 77 seats in the 450-member lower house of parliament.
"Under the present circumstances, this is a good result," the Russian premier said in reference to the financial turmoil gripping in Europe.
