Policemen killed, seven hurt in Chechnya violence
A policemen was killed and seven others were wounded in a shoot-out with a rebel group in Russia's restive Chechnya region on Wednesday, Interfax news agency reported citing security forces.
"An armed group was spotted in a forest and police officers and interior ministry forces went after them. In the fighting one policeman was killed in a shoot-out," Chechyen police told the agency.
Seven other officers were wounded.
The rebels fled to the mountainous and wooded Vedeno region but police said the area was surrounded by security forces.
Moscow has fought two devastating wars with separatists in Muslim-majority Chechnya since 1994.
It is now battling an Islamist-fuelled insurgency there and in the neighbouring regions of the North Caucasus.
