A policeman was killed in Dagestan, while another man received gunshot wounds in a street fight involving more than 200 people in the same volatile Caucasus region, police said on Tuesday.

Unidentified assailants on Monday shot at the home of a policeman near the Dagestani town of Kizlyar who died of his injuries on the spot, regional police said in a statement.

Russia is fighting a Muslim insurgency in the Caucasus and deadly attacks on government officials in Dagestan as well as neighboring Chechnya and Ingushetia are a daily occurrence.

In a separate incident in the same region on Monday, a man was shot in the hip in a brawl over pastureland that involved some 220 people, police said, adding that it was a second street fight in as many days.

A fight in the town of Izberbash late Sunday involved around 50 people and saw several men hospitalised with various injuries including gunshot wounds. Police did not say what triggered the conflict.
