Police officer, daughter killed in Russian Caucasus attack
A police officer and his daughter were killed in a blaze of bullets on Monday in the volatile Russian Caucaus republic of Dagestan, a member of the local police said.
"Some people unknown to the policeman called him and when he stepped outside his house, they opened fire. Upon hearing the shots, his wife and daughter also stepped outside and the criminals shot at them," the representative was quoted as saying by the RIA Novosti news agency.
The policeman and his daughter died on the scene, while his wife was taken to the hospital, he added.
In the neighbouring Ingushetia region, a policeman was killed when criminals fired a grenade launcher at a police station, a police source was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti.
An increasingly deadly Islamist-driven insurgency in the North Caucasus regions of Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia has claimed scores of lives annually.
Attacks and assasination attempts occur on a near-daily basis in the region, of which Dagestan has been particularly affected.
