One dead, heavy damage as tornado hits Russian Far East city
A tornado in Russia's Far Eastern Amur region left one person dead and caused widespread damage on Sunday as violent winds turned over cars and tore the roofs from homes, local authorities said.
Thirteen other people were injured after the tornado struck the city of Blagoveshchensk, near the Chinese border about 8,000 kilometres (5,000 miles) east of Moscow, Amur region deputy governor Viktor Kapkanshchikov was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency.
"The wind was so violent that it overturned 40-tonne lorries, demolished dozens of kiosks and uprooted trees. The balconies of several homes were partially damaged and cars parked in a lot were turned over," he said.
