Russian-led security group CSTO will not deploy peacekeepers to Kyrgyzstan but it may send security "specialists" to the ex-Soviet state, the organisation's secretary general said Thursday.

"We are looking at the question of sending specialists to the republic who know how to plan and prepare operations to prevent mass disorders.... But there is no question of sending peacekeepers to Kyrgyzstan," Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) secretary general Nikolai Bordyuzha told the Interfax news agency.

He provided no further details about the "specialists" but suggested they could be used to track down those behind the five days of clashes between ethnic Kyrgyz and Uzbeks that rocked Kyrgyzstan in the past week, killing at least 191 people.

Kyrgyzstan's interim leader, Roza Otunbayeva, appealed last week to Russia for military assistance to bring the ethnic fighting in the south of the country under control.
