Moscow approves Navalny's candidacy in mayoral polls
The city of Moscow on Wednesday accepted the candidacy of Russian protest leader Alexei Navalny to stand in mayoral elections on September 8, the first time the charismatic opposition figurehead has sought high office.
Navalny has been registered as a candidate for the elections, the head of the Moscow election commission Valentin Gorbunov told reporters. Navalny was not present at the registration.
But Navalny's bid could still be thwarted depending on the verdict on Thursday in his trial on embezzlement charges where he faces up to six years in jail.
