Merkel to meet PMs of Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova
German Chancellor Angela Merkel will next Wednesday meet Ukraine's Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk and the leaders of Georgia and Moldova in Berlin, her spokeswoman said.
Yatsenyuk, Georgia's Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and their Moldovan counterpart Iurie Leanca will discuss the situation in the region over dinner with Merkel, said her spokeswoman Christiane Wirtz on Friday.
Ukraine's presidential election on Sunday "will naturally play a role" in these discussions, said Wirtz.
The subject will have already been discussed on Tuesday by EU heads of state and government, meeting in Brussels for an informal summit.
Merkel on Friday called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to accept the assessment of the elections by the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
Putin said Friday he would respect the choice of the Ukrainian people in Sunday's presidential vote but that ousted ex-leader Viktor Yanukovych technically remained in power.
"We understand that the people of Ukraine want their country to emerge from this crisis. We will treat their choice with respect," Putin told an economic forum.
