Medvedev congratulates Germany on 20 years of reunification
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev congratulated Germany on the 20th anniversary of its reunification on Sunday, saying that it had laid the foundation for "strategic partnership" between the two countries.
Medvedev said that Russia had made a "key contribution" to the reunification between former east and west Germany in a message to the German leadership released by the Kremlin.
The reunification carries an "enduring historic significance not only for the German people but for the whole of Europe," Medvedev said.
"I consider that the foundation for the current Russian-German strategic partnership was laid back then," Medvedev said, praising business, scientific and cultural links between the countries.
Medvedev hailed his "constructive" meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in July at a summit in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg that saw the signing of multi-billion-euro deals between the two countries.
Following reunification, Russia pulled more than a million servicemen and their families from former east Germany, where troops had been stationed since the end of World War II, with the last leaving in 1994.
