Local official killed in Russian Caucasus
Unidentified gunmen killed a local official in Russia's southern Dagestan region in the turbulent North Caucasus area, the Russian Committee of Inquiry said on Tuesday.
"Unidentified assailants opened fire on area official Magomedgadji Aliev at about 17:30 pm (1330GMT) in Tchernychevski street in Kaspiisk, near the capital Makhatchkala, as he returned home in his car," the RIA Novosti agency quoted official Alkhas Amirkhanov as saying.
"He died from his injuries and the assailants fled," he added.
Attacks on governments officials and police are a regular occurrence in the North Caucasus region, and in Dagestan in particular.
At the weekend two policemen were killed in separate incidents.
After the war in Chechenya (1994-1996) between Russian forces and separatists, the rebellion became progressively Islamized and spilled over Chechen borders, becoming active in the whole of the North Caucasus area.
