A regional lawmaker in Russia's volatile North Caucasus region of Dagestan was wounded and his brother killed late Friday when their Mercedes was pelted with gunfire, regional police said.

Unidentified assailants attacked the car of Dagestani lawmaker Alibulat Gasanov, wounding him and his brother who died later of multiple injuries, a spokeswoman for regional police said on Saturday.

"The Mercedes car has got 12 bullet holes," spokeswoman Fatina Ubaidatova told AFP, saying the lawmaker was now being treated for injuries at a hospital. She did not provide further details.

Russia is fighting an Islamist insurgency in the Caucasus and deadly attacks on government officials in Dagestan as well as neighbouring Chechnya and Ingushetia are frequent.

The attack comes as the country gears up to hold elections in several regions including Dagestan on Sunday.
