Helen Thomas retires amid row over Israel remarks

Longtime Washington journalist Helen Thomas abruptly retired on Monday following remarks she made about Israel in a move that was decried by the White House and her colleagues. The 89-year-old journalist began her career with the wire service United Press International in 1943, working as a special correspondent who did not think twice before grilling her interviewees with thorny questions.
