Gunmen kill serviceman in Russian Caucasus: police
Unidentified gunmen killed a Russian soldier stationed in the volatile North Caucasus region of Dagestan, regional police said on Monday.
The serviceman was attacked Sunday night near his home in the settlement of Kizlyarsky and died of gunshot wounds on the spot, regional police said in a statement, without providing further details.
The Kremlin fought two wars against separatist rebels in Chechnya in the 1990s, and the violence has since spread into nearby regions of Dagestan and Ingushetia.
Despite the Russian authorities' tough rhetoric and pledges to root out terror, attacks on government officials and servicemen in the region show no signs of abating.
