Greek PM invited to visit Russia in May: office

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Thursday spoke on the telephone to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who invited him to join Russia's victory day parade in May, officials said.

"The Russian president congratulated the prime minister on the election of the new government... and invited him to Moscow on May 9," according to a statement issued by Tsipras' office.

Tsipras, a former Communist, heads a hard-left government that is challenging Greece's European creditors over the country's unpopular bailout, and is believed to be cultivating closer ties to Russia.

Days after it came to power last week, Greece protested against an EU statement threatening further sanctions against Russia over the crisis in Ukraine.

The new foreign minister Nikos Kotzias later said that the EU should avoid "spasmodic" moves against Russia.
