Gorbachev mourns Havel as man of 'great humanist values'
Soviet ex-leader Mikhail Gorbachev sent condolences to the Czech Republic Monday over the death of the country's former president Vaclav Havel, calling him a man of "great humanist values."
"Meeting Vaclav Havel in various political and life situations, I always recognised him as a statesman and person who held great and inspiring humanist values and was open to solid and constructive dialogue," Gorbachev said in a letter to current Czech leader Vaclav Klaus.
"I remember his official visit to the Soviet Union in 1990, when we held key talks in the Kremlin about building new bridges for cooperation between our countries, including the sensitive issue of pulling Soviet troops out of Czechoslovakia," said the letter published on Gorbachev's website Gorby.ru.
"We parted on good terms, having found mutual understanding and, more importantly, ways to constructively overcome problems that were of vital importance to our countries."
