French President Nicolas Sarkozy is to host the leaders of Germany and Russia next month to discuss security and an upcoming G20 summit, his office said on Monday.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will attend the talks at Deauville on the northern French coast on October 18 and 19, said a statement from the Elysee palace.

"The meeting will be an opportunity for our three countries to hold further discussions on our partnerships in all arenas and on joint security issues," it said.

The encounter will also offer a chance to discuss joint positions ahead of the November 11-12 G20 summit in South Korea.

France takes the helm of the Group of 20 rich and emerging economies in November and the Group of Eight in January.

The G20 is the premier global economic forum, with members accounting for 90 percent of the world's gross national product and 80 percent of world trade.
