Four suspected rebels killed in Russia's Ingushetia: report
A rebel leader and three of his men died in a gunbattle with security troops in Russia's troubled Caucasus region of Ingushetia which borders Chechnya, the Interfax news agency said Tuesday.
"The FSB security service got information that the guerrilla underground was planning major terrorist acts, and as police tried to arrest Ilez Gardanov and his accomplices, they offered armed resistance and were eliminated," an FSB official said overnight.
The Kremlin says the unrest in the Caucasus is its biggest domestic problem.
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has announced a major economic drive to make the impoverished region more attractive to investors in a bid to end insurgency in the troubled Caucasus.
