Four elderly residents die in fire at Russian care home
Four elderly residents of a retirement home in central Russia have died after a fire swept through the one-storey wooden building, the emergency ministry said on Sunday.
"As a result of the fire, four people died," while firemen managed to evacuate nine of 13 residents and one member of staff, the emergency ministry said in a statement on its website.
The fire broke out overnight in the care home in the village of Tikhon in the Kostroma region, blazing over 300 square metres and destroying the building completely, the ministry said. Television images showed brick chimney stacks were all that remained of the building.
Initial information indicated the fire was a result of smoking and a criminal probe has been launched, the ministry said.
Russia has seen several devastating fires in recent years at rundown state-owned care homes, often housed in old buildings.
Nine died in a fire at a retirement home in the Tver region in August last year. In January 2009, 23 people died in a fire at a home in the remote northwestern Komi region.
