Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Tuesday met with Finnish President Tarja Halonen at her summer residence in the town of Naantali, where she invited him to take a swim in the Baltic sea.

At a joint press conference with Halonen, Medvedev told reporters he was always happy to visit Finland in the summer.

Halonen said "good neighbours meet each other regularly to update their knowledge to talk about what is happening in the world."

She then jokingly invited Medvedev to take a dip in the Baltic sea, which is one of the world's most polluted seas.

"I hope President Medvedev is going to swim in the Baltic Sea, if he is not prevented from doing so at last minute by blue algae," she said. "Let's keep our fingers crossed."

The two presidents were set to have dinner on Tuesday after discussing international crises and bilateral cooperation.

On Wednesday, Medvedev was set to hold a meeting with newly appointed Finnish Prime Minister Mari Kiviniemi.
