Finnish embassy employee in Moscow arrested: Finnish police

Finnish authorities have arrested an employee at its Moscow embassy on suspicion of embezzlement and abuse of office, police in Helsinki said Tuesday.

"According to the investigation so far, the suspect received cash and services for his or her actions," the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said, adding that the suspected crimes took place over the past two years.

NBI police commissioner Kimmo Huhta-aho told AFP that because of the sensitive nature of the suspicions, police would not reveal details of nationality, gender or job other than saying it was a "young" visa official.

"I can say that the monetary gain the individual got from the suspected activities was not very significant," Huhta-aho said.

He said since the alleged crimes took place at the embassy, the responsibility for investigation and prosecution rests with Finnish officials regardless of whether the suspect is a Finnish or Russian citizen.

The suspect was placed under arrest on October 2, and the state prosecutor has until October 15 to press charges.
