Falling ice kills teenager in Saint Petersburg
A Russian teenager was killed by ice that fell from a building in Saint Petersburg, prompting a manslaughter inquiry, investigators said Monday.
The 18-year-old girl, who was killed Friday, became the fifth fatality in similar accidents this winter, the regional investigating committee said in a statement.
Two of the dead were children, while hundreds of others have been injured, it said, faulting city services charged with removing snow from roofs to avoid ice falls when the spring thaw comes.
Saint Petersburg governor Valentina Matvienko has come under fire over the accidents, with a local politician calling for her to be prosecuted for negligence.
