At least eight people died and four were injured on Friday when a bus crashed into a lorry and burst into flames on a highway outside Moscow, officials said.

"Four people were hospitalised after the accident with wounds and burns...," the head of Moscow region traffic police told the Interfax news agency.

"We believe eight bodies may be inside the bus. They were severely burnt in the fire."

The regional emergency ministry said in an earlier statement that 10 people were believed to have died in the crash at around 4:00 am local time (midnight GMT), while eight passengers were uninjured and able to escape from the bus.

The bus carrying 22 passengers, including two drivers, was travelling from Tambov to Moscow when it collided with a lorry driving in the same direction and a fire broke out onboard, the emergency ministry said.
