Eight people were killed in a crash between two cars on a road near the Russian city of Ulyanovsk on the River Volga, the local branch of the ministry for emergency situations said Sunday.

"Four people -- two men and two women -- died on the spot... And four others died in a hospital," it said in a statement.

A six-year-old boy was among the dead.

Road accidents claim about 30,000 lives in Russia every year, one of the highest tolls worldwide, with alcohol, poor infrastructure and non-compliance with traffic rules mainly to blame.
