European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso on Sunday paid tribute to Soviet dissident Yelena Bonner, who has died aged 88, for her courage in fighting for human rights.

"She stood side by side with her husband (Nobel peace laureate Andrei Sakharov) in the fight for political freedom, democracy and human rights in the former Soviet Union, and all over the world," Barroso said in a statement.

"I want to pay tribute to the courage she showed in standing up for fundamental freedoms and human dignity that people worldwide demand."
