Drunk Russian policeman kills Brazilian in hit-and-run
A drunk Russian policeman has killed a Brazilian national in Moscow in a hit-and-run accident, police said Thursday.
The incident took place in the western part of the city, where "an Audi A car, travelling at high speed, hit the young man on a crosswalk," a police source told Interfax news agency.
The victim was a 24-year old Brazilian, and the driver a 29-year-old inebriated police captain who works in a nearby police office, the source said. The victim died on the spot.
The Brazilian embassy said it was "checking into the incident" and the consul is speaking with witnesses. The name of the victim is not yet known, embassy representatives told Interfax.
Russia has one of the worst traffic safety records in the world, with pedestrians especially vulnerable. Police officials are regularly implicated in traffic accidents that result in deaths.
In 2009, 26,000 people died on Russia's roads.
