A police officer was shot and killed Tuesday while on patrol in Russia's volatile region of Chechnya, police sources said.

"Unknown assailants opened fire on a group of police on a reconnaissance operation in a large forest near the village of Samachki in the Achkhoy-Martan district," Russian news agencies quoted local police as saying.

"A police commander died of his injuries on the way to hospital," said the source.

The attackers fled the scene after the attack in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Russia's restive Caucasus region, which includes Chechnya, has seen a renewal of violence in recent months.

Islamic militants are active, and attacks and explosions -- particularly targetted at security forces -- are an almost daily occurrence.
