A car bomb exploded on Friday near a cafe in Russia's volatile North Caucasus region of Dagestan, killing two people and wounding at least five, police said.

A regional police spokesman told AFP that the vehicle exploded near a cafe on the outskirts of the town of Khasavyurt in Dagestan Friday evening, killing two people. Five more people received serious injuries as a result of the blast, the spokesman added.

"Three are believed to be in intensive care," he added, noting officials currently worked at the scene and no more details were avalaible at the moment.

Russia is battling an Islamist insurgency in the Caucasus and deadly attacks on government and police officials in Dagestan as well as neighbouring Chechnya and Ingushetia are an almost daily occurrence.

The day before one traffic policeman was killed and another wounded in Makhachkala, another town in the region of Dagestan.
