At least four Russian sailors died and seven were missing Wednesday when their Cambodian-flagged bulk carrier sank off South Korea after an apparent collision, the coastguard said.

The 1,500-ton Alexandra with 12 Russian crew on board went down about 16 miles off the southeastern port of Ulsan, a coastguard spokesman told AFP.

"An investigation is under way, but we believe a large vessel might have smashed the ship's stern," he said.

The bow was still above the sea, he said, adding the ship was not carrying any oil or liquid chemicals.

South Korean patrol boats rescued one Russian crew member from a lifeboat and recovered four bodies, while seven others were still missing, the spokesman said.

He said a helicopter and seven patrol boats had been dispatched for the search.
