At least 10 people were killed Sunday when a bus plunged more than 60 metres (197 feet) down a ravine in the breakaway Georgian region of South Ossetia, Russian news agency Interfax reported.

The accident happened as the bus travelled in mountainous terrain close to the border with Russian-controlled North Ossetia.

"The death toll has passed 10 people, including two children. There are 14 more injured," a spokesman for the North Ossetian emergency situations ministry was quoted as saying.

"It has been established that the bus fell into a ravine that was 62 metres deep," said the spokesman.

A spokesman for the South Ossetian interior ministry said the cause of the crash was unknown, and weather conditions in the area were normal.
