A plane carrying a number of people freed by Russia in a sensational spy swap deal with the United States landed at an international airport outside Washington Friday, an AFP correspondent saw.

The Vision airline plane landed around 5:30 pm (2130 GMT) after a flight from Vienna where the exchange took place.

Russia released four people convicted for working for Western intelligence agencies in return for its 10 spies freed late Thursday after pleading guilty in a New York court to being foreign agents.

It was not known how many of the four were still on board the plane when it arrived at Dulles international airport, as according to the British media it had briefly stopped first at the Brize Norton air base in central England.
