Strike against government cuts shut Lisbon metro
A partial strike against government austerity measures paralysed Lisbon's underground railway system during morning rush hour Tuesday, officials said.
All stations on the metro were shut down by the strike which was scheduled to continue until 11:00 am (1000 GMT), the fourth this month protesting government cuts.
Public transport workers are opposed to austerity measures that include an average five percent cut in salaries as well as a 15 percent cut in expenditure by public companies.
Prime minister Jose Socrates resigned Wednesday after parliament rejected more cuts aimed at reducing the deficit to 4.6 percent of GDP.
