Lisbon metro hit by strike
Staff of the Lisbon metro went on strike Tuesday in protest against the centre-right government's austerity measures, with a union representative saying all the stations were closed.
"Support for the strike is total," the spokesperson for the transport workers' union said.
The four-hour strike, which started at 6:30 am (0630 GMT), was called to protest against the abolition of end-of-the-year bonuses, non-payment of holidays and cuts in overtime.
Strikes and demonstrations have mushroomed in Portugal against the government's moves to restore sound financing, with the tough 2013 budget raising income taxes all round.
