Amsterdam | 10/03/2009 - 10/03/2009 Romeyn de Hooghe: De verbeelding van de late gouden Eeuw

Major exhibition about the life and work of the Dutch Baroque engraver, painter, sculptor and caricaturist Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708). On show is a selection of his prints, book illustrations, medals and door panels. Romeyn de Hooghe was a ‘pictor doctus‘ (educated painter) and best known for political caricatures of Louis XIV and propagandistic prints supporting William of Orange. He was a versatile artist and a very productive and a quick-acting etcher and book illustrator. With his prints and illustrations, he documented the news of his time, such as the war against France and the Turkish-conflict. In addition he illustrated hundreds of scientific, political and religious books and designed medals, chalices, wall paintings and stained-glass windows, for which he was highly praised.
