Amsterdam | 10/03/2009 - 10/03/2009 Passion for Fans

Exhibition of fans selected from the collection assembled by Isabella Henriette van Eeghen (1913-1996), a historian and assistant municipal archivist as well as a passionate collector. On show are over two hundred fans from 1700 up until the 20th century. Fans are known from as far back as Ancient Egypt and Byzantium. The earliest were used to keep flies away and to provide a cool breeze; fans were also used in ceremonies and rituals. Via the Orient the fan found its way to Europe, where it gradually developed into an elegant, luxury item. Van Eeghen was born into a prominent, cultivated family of Amsterdam bankers. She began her collection in 1951 when she bought a celluloid fan for one guilder. Over the years, her collection grew, eventually encompassing a rich and varied selection of over a thousand objects (The exhibition marks the 150th anniversary of the Royal Antiquarian Society (Koninklijk Oudheidkundig Genootschap), to which Miss van Eeghen donated her colle! ction)
