Awesome Amsterdam: 15 best burgers in Amsterdam

Comments0 comments

Awesome Amsterdam has done the hard work of sampling Amsterdam's best hamburgers for you – here they list their top hamburger joints in the Dutch capital.

Craving a juicy meat patty with a side of crispy fries? Like elsewhere in the world, the hamburger trend has taken hold in Amsterdam, where local restaurants are perfecting their recipes to compete for having the best hamburgers in the Netherlands.

The title for the 'best burger in the Netherlands 2015' was awarded to Ter Marsch & Co. in Rotterdam. Their prize winner was ‘The Burgeresse’, which comes with Scottish Angus beef and Japanese Wagyu and winter truffle gravy.

But there are many restaurants to choose from serving up tasty hamburgers. Here are our top 15 choices for the best hamburgers in Amsterdam, in no particular order.

Burgermeester

Burgermeester is not just about ordinary hamburgers. Lots of tasty options mean there is something for everyone, and there are also three locations to choose from in the city. Try the lamb burger with Spanish chorizo or a salmon burger with creme fraiche and asparagus. There are vegetarian options as well, like the felafel burger topped with feta and watermelon. No fries on the side at this joint, but the burgers are so filling you won't miss them. Prices are reasonable and you have the choice of a mini burger or regular size. Or go wild and try the mini trio!

Tip: you won't find fries or booze at Burgermeester, but you will find some nice burgers.

The Butcher

The Butcher is conveniently located on Albert Cuypstraat in De Pijp, and this small but sleek burger bar offers several sandwiches to satisfy different tastes. Perusing the menu is entertaining, with clever item names referring to films and pop culture. The Butcher is a great choice for a casual pre-drinks meal or an after-drinks 'soak up the alcohol, prevent the hangover' treat. You can even get that hangover started here – there is a secret hidden cocktail bar in the back.

Tip: Now you can also find The Butcher at De Foodhallen.

Cafe Kostverloren

Cafe Kostverloren is a friendly neighborhood cafe in Oud-West along a wide canal. People are drawn to their burgers which are dubbed the Ladyburger and Mannenburger due to their respective sizes. Kostverloren also serves up a weekly special hamburger, as well as a veggie burger. Hungry diners will find yummy nachos, sandwiches, salads, soups and creative entrees. Or just go for drinks on their big terrace.

Brouwerij Troost

With the same owners as Cafe Kostverloren it is no surprise that Troost would have great burgers as well. We've sampled the classic as well as the veggie burger and both were scrumptious. Their house IPA makes a good pairing.

Tip: If you are vegetarian or just need a break from beef, try Troost's lentil and quinoa veggie burger. Topped with fresh pickles and sriracha-truffle mayo, it is a taste sensation.

Cafe Walvis

Hit up Cafe de Walvis in the Spaarndammerbuurt for the delicious burger seen below. This huge hamburger is so good it could become addictive and leave you looking like a walvis yourself. It is one of our favourite hamburgers in the city – it's flavourful with super crispy fries on the side. Walvis offers a filling vegetarian burger as well. When the sun is shining grab a table outside, or go inside the cozy cafe when the weather is cooler.

de Ysbreeker

If you are feeling hungry in the east of Amsterdam we recommend the big burger at Ysbreeker; add a beer and a side of fries for a hearty meal. This cafe is lovely both inside and out, and the huge terrace on the Amstel cannot be beat; in the summer it catches the afternoon sun perfectly. Stop by for dinner and drinks after a visit to the nearby Hermitage Museum.

Cannibale Royale

Serving meals until midnight, Cannibale Royale is one of the top choices for a delicious late-night burger. If your dining companions are not in the mood for a burger they can go for the ribs, lamb chops or even a salad.

Cannibale Royale is a great place to dine after you've already been out for a few drinks earlier in the evening. You can continue to booze it up while relaxing in the dimly lit but nicely decorated space. Afterward, dance off the calories at Disco Dolly next door.

Tip: At their second location in de Pijp they are even open for lunch, so grab a seat outside for a burger on the terrace.

The Beef Chief

Simon, also known as The Beef Chief, serves up our top tasty burger in Amsterdam. His burgers are not just our favourite, they were also voted best burger in Amsterdam at the Burger Beer Battle in 2014.

What makes The Beef Chief's burgers the best? He is a master at combining savory, salty and spicy flavours to make mouthwatering creations that blow your socks off. While The Beef Chief has a variety of burger options, we always go for the KimChief, with spicy homemade kimchi and sriracha.

You can find The Beef Chief serving up his delicious concoctions from his beefmobile at the Sunday Market and other festivals and events around town. Currently he is popping up on Thursday evenings at Staring at Jacob, but check his website or Facebook page for details.

The Young Pretenders

The Young Pretenders were close contenders at the Burger Beer Battle of 2014. We absolutely loved their spicy Punk Seoul Burger with bacon and cheese. Don't tell The Beef Chief but we had a really hard time deciding on our favourite between the two.

You can find The Young Pretenders at festivals, popups and events around Amsterdam. Check out their Facebook page for the latest news. Be sure to try one of their super creative combos like the Elvis, topped with maple bacon, peanut butter and raspberry jam. Wow!

Bar Huf

Bar Huf is a cozy and rustic cafe, with exposed brick walls, wood beams and bright red-and-white-checkered tablecloths. Huf serves food until 11pm, which is later than most other restaurants around town. The best news is their awesome burgers served with big bowls of crispy fries with ketchup and mayo.

Tip: Try to secure a reservation beforehand or pop in on a weeknight. The small space creates a charming feeling to the restaurant but also means it fills up very quickly.

Thrill Grill

Located near the Albert Cuypmarkt, Thrill Grill is a good spot to enjoy a burger and fries before hitting the bars in de Pijp. Try the truffle parmesan fries and wash it all down with a milkshake, American style.

Tip: Thrill Grill doesn't take reservations so you might have to wait for a seat on their terrace when the afternoons are sunny. But they do have a full bar!

Burger Bar

Burger Bar serves up tasty hamburgers that you build yourself from their list of topping options. They even have a portobello mushroom burger as a vegetarian choice. Their fries are a nice crispy accompaniment. The Burger Bar locations are a bit touristy and can be crazy busy, but still provide a good alternative for a burger especially late at night (they are open until 4am on weekends). The newest location at Warmoesstraat is the largest and nicest of the three, and also serves wine and beer.

Cafe 't Gasthuys

A typical Amsterdam charming cafe in the heart of the city, Cafe 't Gasthuys dishes up a giant cheeseburger daily for lunch or dinner. Their burger is topped with aged cheese, a yummy secret sauce and pancetta, and served with a heap of fries. You can pair your burger with a beer or glass of wine.

Tip: It may not be the most fancy gourmet hipster burger in town, but it will certainly fill your tummy and leave you satisfied for not too much cash. And to some people, that is the best.

Burgerlijk Amsterdams

This tiny burger cafe in the Negen Straatjes is really good. At first glance the menu has a familiar feel, reminding us a little of Burger Bar in some ways but better. Choose a beef, chicken or veggie burger and then decide what toppings you like. The burger we had was perfectly cooked, moist and tasty. We highly recommend trying this new burger joint.

Tip: Get a serving of their crispy fries on the side – they have the potato skins still on them, just the way mama makes them.

Frits Burgers & Bier

Hungry? Opt for a burger with onion rings or fries on the side. Feeling healthy? Skip the fries and go for grilled veggies instead. Frits also has tasty salads. We enjoyed the spicy 'chilli' burger, and we liked that they had a changing selection of beers (including locals like Oedipus Brewing) as well as wine and G&Ts.
