Batavia Stad: Holland's first factory outlet centre
Attention shoppers: the Netherlands leaps into modern retailing with Batavia Stad.
As most expats will tell you, shopping in the Netherlands is a rather dull affair, with a limited assortment of chain stores dominating every major city.
But now there is good news for those left uninspired by the local shopping scene. On 26 July 2001, the first factory outlet centre in Holland opened to the public. Outlet shopping has been available all throughout Europe but never quite made it to the Netherlands because of continuous disputes between the local and national government, and resistance from smaller retailers.
Holland has leaped into 21st century retailing with Batavia Stad an outside outlet shopping centre located in Lelystad just north of Amsterdam.
Batavia Stad is a mall offering top brands at discount prices from about 70 leading global retailers, including Polo Raulph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Nike, Desigual, Docker, Lacoste, Converse and Adidas. There are a variety of stores available to accomodate people of all ages, all sizes, and all types of fashion.
Batavia Stad has a wide range of stores for those who want to shop for other items such as sunglasses or watches, video games and DVD's, or bedding and home appliances.
It appears the Dutch are anxious to take advantage of this American-born trend, whereby manufacturers sell last-season's designer goods and surplus at discounts of up to 70 or 80 percent. All major credit cards are accepted as well as bank cards and cash. ATM's can also be found available inside the shopping area.
The mall has been laid out to accommodate shoppers and their families through the use of different cafes and restaurants (with the availability of sitting outside) and playgrounds for small children.
In its first weekend open, the new EUR 48 million mall, owned by Rodemco Retail Netherlands, drew 50,000 people. The mall consists of 13,600 square metres of retail floor area and 1,500 parking places. The mall is open everyday from 10:00 to 18:00.
Looking for something other than shopping? Batavia stad has the option of taking a motorboat or sailboat out on the open waters or the option to hop on board one of the oldest ships in The Netherlands. Bataviawerf and Naupar are surrounding buildings to the shopping mall and can provide these ammenities.
RCE Scheepsarcheologie, Nieuw Land, are also museums neighboring the shopping mall that give information about the history of the Batavia vessel, nautical and sub-aquatic archaeology and hold interactive programs for children of all ages.
