28/04/2006Times a changing as Dylan plays for Basques

28 April 2006

SAN SEBASTIAN - Bob Dylan has become an unlikely addition to a growing list of celebrities who are lending their support to the fledgling Basque peace process.

Dylan is to play a free concert on the beach in San Sebastian on 11 July in support of ETA's recent permanent ceasefire and moves towards ending the terrorist group's 38-year armed struggle.

Organisers hope tens of thousands of people will attend the concert.

Other big names in the music world are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Dylan, who will headline the Basque Festival of Jazz, has said he does not want any political messages during the concert.

The concert will be part of the legendary folk singer's European tour.

Pope Benedict XVI has added his support to the Basque peace process as has Gerry Adams, leader of Sinn Fein, the political wing of the IRA.
